What type of pull up machine are you looking for?  There are some that are extremely expensive, and then there are the very simple ones that don't cost so much. 

Basically, all you need is a bar that you can hang off of.  There are, however, other luxuries that might be worth considering.  There are also different type of pull up exercises that you might be interested in.  The pull up machineabove image is showcasing the traditional pull up.  With palms facing outward, you pull yourself up so that your head is above your hands.  This is an upper body exercise that requires back and shoulder strength.  There are machines that allow you to accomplish the same thing with less weight then whatever your body may weigh.

You can buy what is called a Power Tower pull up machine.  It is a weigh-lifting piece of equipment that consists of a large frame with customizable bars that you can pull yourself up on.  Some equipment allows for customizing different grips, and lowering the height. A power tower is not as expensive as you think, and you can always find a good brand for under $200.

There are the very simple bars that you can frame above your doorway.  I pull up machineknow a lot of people that use these, and they typically only cost around $20 or so.  These are very easy to find, and I intend on getting one of these.  You don't need any room to store them, and they are extremely convenient.  I imagine you have to be very careful when mounting them to make sure that they can support your weight without tearing out the entire wall.

You might be more interested in getting a chin up machine.  Chin ups are extremely similar to pull ups but they also help target the muscles in the front such as the front deltoids, and biceps muscles.  Pull ups target the shoulders a little bit more.  Even better:  why don't you find a piece of equipment that can be used for both?  Buying a power tower can usually help you accomplish this.  A power tower has a lot of different pieces that you can move around and configure.  That way you can make it possible to perform both chin ups and pull ups on the same machine.  This is very practical if you got the room to store the equipment.

Find the perfect pull up machine for you.  Some are easier for beginners then others.  Sometimes you may want to train on a gym machine that allows for lat pulls before you begin doing pull ups.  It can take a considerable amount of strength to pull up your own weight.  If you weigh a lot it can be even more difficult.  Pull ups are, essentially, very convenient for weight lifters.  They allow you to quickly gain a pump without having to measure out any weights.  You can, however, get most of the benefits from normal gym equipment.  Some people believe free weight exercises are more beneficial for the joints though.  That's something to take into consideration.

When I first started exercising in a gym I could not do a pull up with my own body weight.  I had to use a lat pull down machine to strengthen up my back and shoulder muscles.  It took me a long time, and I was never able to do more then about 8 pull ups at a time.  I was always self consious about my form while I was trying to do them.  Doing pull ups without the assist of a machine can work wonders for your joints.  Not only will you be strengthening your muscles but you'll also be making your joints stronger.  That's when you notice people that are all wobbily because those are the people who use machines more often then free-weights or general exercises.
